You know the feeling, that early morning blinking open of the eyes, realisation that it is day break and for no explained reason…. you feel crap! Welcome to the Winter Blues.
Anxiety sets in, you don’t want to get out of bed and you would rather pull your head back under the duvet and stay there, for months!! Whether you suffer with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or just the desire for sunnier times, the winter months can be challenging.
Well, I have wonderful news for you- it doesn’t have to remain this way. However it is going to require a little work from you, and some commitment to getting through the winter blues,
Here are some tips to help you get through the darkness
Your brain needs natural daylight, so if you can get outside within the first 30 minutes of waking, it will serve you in bucket loads. Even the grey miserable wet days will boost your serotonin levels immensely. So, wrap up, grab the door handle by the horns and get outside, even for a walk around the block, I promise it helps.
The mind work is important and there are a plethora of meditations available to boost you mood and lessen the affects of the winter blues. Whether it is 5 minutes or 15 minutes, guided, or just focusing on bright sunny days and playing on the beach, your brain will be tricked into thinking it is summer again and lift your mood.
Change your routine, if it means taking things a little slower, then do. Or go somewhere new, a new class, start a new hobby, read a book of a genre you have never read, start cross stitch or sewing. Don’t be afraid to use the winter blues to kick start something new – it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t last, it will get you through the worst of it.
During the winter blues is not the time for you to be the supportive, caring, stoic friend you are in the summer. Now is the time for you to be surrounded by other people who make time fly. Laugh, joke, smile and find the people you can really have fun with, and that accept you for all of your emotional wonderfulness.
The winter months can feel long and tiresome, but it is only fleeting. Gain some perspective that, just as nature intended, we are seasonal beings. Winter is meant to be the time that we cosy down, snuggle and get a little quieter. It is ok. Take great care of yourself, do a bit of pampering and learn to love this calmer, quiet time. Even the magnificent Brown Bears hibernate in winter, so if you feel like sleeping more, saying no to a few social occasions then, respect yourself and do so. It will be sunny again soon.
